Favicon compatibility by browser and platform
Which favicon file serves which browser and platform — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS, Android and Google search results. The package generated by EasyFaviconGenerator covers all of them.
| Browser / platform | Files used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome / Edge / Opera (desktop) | favicon.svg, favicon-96x96.png | SVG is preferred when declared; light and dark designs supported. |
| Firefox (desktop) | favicon.svg, favicon-96x96.png | SVG supported, including prefers-color-scheme inside the SVG. |
| Safari 26 and later (macOS) | favicon.svg, favicon-96x96.png, favicon.ico, apple-touch-icon.png | Safari 26 (September 2025) added SVG icon support, including tabs. It does not yet apply prefers-color-scheme rules inside an SVG favicon (WebKit bug 309949), so it shows the default (light) design. Safari also uses the Apple Touch icon in some places (Favorites, Top Sites). |
| Safari 18 and earlier (macOS) | favicon-96x96.png, favicon.ico, apple-touch-icon.png | No SVG favicon support: tab icons come from PNG / ICO, so keep those fallbacks declared. |
| Safari (iOS / iPadOS) | apple-touch-icon.png | Home screen shortcut. Transparent areas turn black. Name from apple-mobile-web-app-title. SVG favicons work from iOS 26; iOS 18 and earlier use PNG / ICO. |
| Chrome (Android) | web-app-manifest-192x192.png, web-app-manifest-512x512.png | Home screen shortcut and splash screen from the manifest; icon may be masked (maskable). |
| Samsung Internet | web-app-manifest-*.png | Uses the manifest icons. |
| Google result pages | favicon-96x96.png or favicon.ico | Square, at least 8x8px, ideally larger than 48x48px (the old multiple-of-48 rule was dropped from Google's docs in 2024). Google Search lists BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF as supported formats, not SVG. Refresh can take days. |
| Old browsers, RSS readers, PDF viewers | favicon.ico | Request /favicon.ico without reading the HTML. |
| Windows 8/10 tiles (legacy) | mstile-*.png, browserconfig.xml | Optional, discontinued. |
| Safari 9-11 pinned tab (legacy) | safari-pinned-tab.svg | Optional, legacy; since Safari 12 (2018) pinned tabs use the regular favicon. |
